Ratchet Friday : Splitting the Bill, Big Group Edition

- Money
- Couth
- Common sense
- Tax
- Gratuity
- Class

What do all these words have in common? Things you should think about when going out as a big group, Unfortunately; They do not exist when it comes time to pay the bill. Have you ever heard the phrase "who ordered gratuity?". By far splitting a bill with a group of people is the most difficult thing to accomplish in urban society. At times; one will wonder has anyone ever been to a restaurant.

Bill paying etiquette

1) Research -
Understand where you are going. Make sure you can pay for yourself.  Check out the venue online to see if you can afford the activity.  If you are celebrating an occasion for a person, walk with enough money to to pay for yourself and the person.

2) Assume -
When you assume, you make an "ass" out of "u" and "me". Do not buy anything for the group. Your thoughtful gesture may not be taken as well as you would like. If you do,  be prepared to take care of that order by yourself. Your loved ones may love surprises, not so much for people on a budget.

3) Communism -
If everyone pretty much orders in the same price range,  it's OK to split the bill evenly,  stop being cheap, don't mess up the vibe over $2.

4) Bring Cash -
I have never been a cashier or a waiter, but; I'm pretty sure it is annoying; to have to swipe 20 different credit cards and retrieve three sets of papers for each. Don't be a douche, take out some cash before you arrive, no one wants to deal with all that separate paperwork.

5) Be a Loner -
If you know you will be going somewhere with people you may not know,  do what I do,  get there early and ask who ever is waiting on your party to just bring your bill on a separate tab, If they make it an issue , go to the bar, get a drink and take that tab to the table.

First experience :

Some classmates and I went to a nice restaurant in Baltimore. I was 18 at the time and hadn't experience a lot of fine dining. After I reviewed the menu, I realized the entrees were out my budget for this sitting. I ordered some appetizer crab cakes and I was satisfied with that. Being nosey, I paid attention to what others ordered and compared the price on the menu. (Let's fast forward in order for me not to be long winded) one particular person gave $40,  their meal including a drink came to like $39 before tax, and this person was set on giving that as payment for the meal. Luckily an older more financially stable classmate knocked out the rest, this was my first experience with someone not paying their full part of the tab ,unfortunately;  not my last.

(If you didn't realize what was wrong with that person's payment)

39 is your total from the menu,  add your tax (differs for what state you live in), add gratuity (usually between 10-20%),  and then you get what you owe, for arguments sake Let's say tax is 10% and Gratuity is 15%.

LET'S DO SOME MATH :

   $ 39.00                    Total:     39.00
X        .10                                  + 3.90
___________                              _______
  $ 3.9 tax                               $  42.90

$ 42.90                      Total:       42.90
x      .15                                    +   6.44
_________                                  ________
     6.44                                     $ 49.34

Grand Total:  $ 49.34

Ladies and Gentlemen,  stop being stupid and inconsiderate,  stop expecting free things, always make sure you can pay for yourself plus extra, in case s#!t happens. Now you know the big group etiquette,  live life righteously.
